'A-- Back Home' (feat. Neon Hitch)
Gym Class Heroes
Gym Class Heroes teams with rising star Neon Hitch on 'A-- Back
Home,' the second single off the band's 'The Paper Chronicles II' album.
The lyrics tell the story of a person becoming suspicious of a
partner's activities while the partner is away for a period of time.
While very much a pop song, the song contains a few dub and reggae
elements, making for an interesting sound. The experiment became a
success for the band as it became their fourth top 10 hit ever.

'What Makes You Beautiful'
One Direction
British-Irish boy band One Direction, who came together as a result
of the seventh season of the British reality show 'The X Factor,' made a

States on February 28, 2012 and eventually reached as high as number
four on the Billboard Hot 100. One Direction has won the hearts of teen
idols worldwide with their first album and is currently embarking on a
worldwide 'Up All Night' tour.

'Turn Me On' (feat. Nicki Minaj)
David Guetta
David Guetta collaborated with several superstars for his album
'Nothing but the Beat' but the song that electrified the radio ended up
being 'Turn Me On' featuring hip-hop star Nicki Minaj. The club friendly
dance track received some criticism for autotuning Minaj's vocals but
in the end, the song turned out to be a hit as it reached as high as
number four on the Billboard Hot 100, tying it as Guetta's second most
successful single after 'Without You.'
06
'Somebody That I Used to Know' (feat. Kimbra)
Gotye
Singer-songwriter Gotye has been an international star for quite
some time but it wasn't until 'Somebody That I Used to Know' that the
Belgian-Australian would become a superstar in the United States. The
mellow song about the pain of breakups also introduced New Zealand
singer Kimbra to the US, who provides additional vocals on the song. The
collaboration would help Gotye earn the honor of the first Australian
artist to have a number one hit since Savage Garden.

'We Are Young'
Fun.
Indie-alternative group Fun. probably would have never guessed that
they would have one of the biggest mainstream songs of 2012. But after
'We Are Young' was covered by Glee and later used in a Chevrolet
spot during Super Bowl XLVI, the song grew from being an alternative
chart topper to being one of music's mainstream hits of the year. The
song is the band's first number one song and has sold 300,000 digital
copies in seven weeks.
04
'Set Fire to the Rain'
Adele
Adele's third single 'Set Fire to the Rain' off '21' was another
super hit for the British singer. Much like 'Rolling in the Deep' and
'Someone Like You,' the song's lyrics painted a portrait of a lover
scorned by a former flame. The track was Adele's third number one off
the album and was used in promo spots for TV shows such as Rescue Me, Ringer and Revenge.
03
'Glad You Came'
The Wanted
A mega success overseas, The Wanted didn't reach superstar status
in the United States until 'Glad You Came' started blowing up charts in
late 2011 and eventually hit number one on Top 40 radio charts across
the country in 2012. The song reached as high as number three on the
Billboard Hot 100, making it the most successful British boy band song
since Take That's 1995 hit 'Back for Good.'
02
'Part of Me'
Katy Perry
'Part of Me' was the first single off Katy Perry's rerelease of
'Teenage Dream' titled 'Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection.'
'Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection' contained all 'Teenage Dream'
as well as three new songs. It was widely speculated that the lyrics in
'Part of Me' were directed at Perry's ex-boyfriend, Travis McCoy, but
was cut from the 'Teenage Dream' album.
01
'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)'
Kelly Clarkson
The title track off Kelly Clarkson's fifth studio album 'Stronger'
has taken 2012 by storm. The upbeat pop-rock track is reminiscent of
another one of Clarkson's post-breakup songs, 'Since U Been Gone,' and
has been met with critical and commercial praise for its catchy hook.
'Stronger' is now Clarkson's third number one hit after 'A Moment Like
This' and 'My Life Would Suck Without You' and continues to dominate
charts across multiple genres and overseas as well.
